Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has fallen to its lowest level since 2012 [1].
While the decline in clear-cutting marks a significant policy victory for the current administration, a more insidious threat has emerged. Forest degradation, the thinning of canopy cover without total removal, is now increasing at a rate that exceeds deforestation.
Government policies under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have sharply reduced the rate of total forest loss. Data from April 2024 showed that deforestation fell 68% [3] compared with the previous year. Other reports indicate that overall deforestation slowed by nearly half compared to the year before [4].
Despite these gains, the rainforest faces a tougher foe in the form of degradation. This process is driven by a combination of illegal logging, persistent drought, and wildfires [1], [2]. Unlike deforestation, which is the complete removal of vegetation, degradation weakens the forest's structure and its ability to store carbon.
Environmental monitors said that the rise in degradation is outpacing the decline in clear-cutting [1]. The shift suggests that while the Brazilian government has successfully targeted the large-scale removal of trees, it is struggling to combat the fragmented damage caused by climate-driven fires and selective logging [2].
These trends highlight a complex battle for the Amazon. The administration has focused on enforcement to stop the expansion of cattle ranching and soy farming, the primary drivers of total deforestation, but the forest remains vulnerable to systemic environmental stress [1], [2].
“Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has fallen to its lowest level since 2012”
The shift from deforestation to degradation indicates that Brazil's success in stopping total land clearing is being offset by a decline in forest quality. Because degraded forests are more susceptible to fire and less efficient at sequestering carbon, the Amazon's role as a global climate stabilizer is at risk even as the total area of standing forest appears to stabilize.
