Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a 1,096-km [1] border road project during a security review visit to Bikaner, Rajasthan.

The initiative aims to strengthen national security by improving infrastructure and intelligence coordination along the frontier. By enhancing mobility and providing better facilities for personnel, the government seeks to secure the region against external threats.

Shah visited the Saanchu BSF border post as part of a larger tour across four states to assess border-security arrangements [2]. During the two-day [3] visit to Bikaner, which began on May 25, 2024 [4], the minister interacted with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to evaluate current operational readiness.

As part of a focus on personnel welfare, Shah inaugurated new barracks specifically for women BSF personnel [5]. The infrastructure upgrades include new fencing, and improved water supply systems for Rajasthan border outposts [1].

Beyond military infrastructure, the visit included the launch of the Vibrant Villages Programme-2. This initiative will provide a connectivity boost to 184 villages [6] located along the border. The program is designed to integrate these remote settlements more closely with the rest of the country through improved digital and physical infrastructure.

Shah said the projects are essential for the comprehensive security of the border region. The review process involved assessing how intelligence agencies and security forces coordinate their efforts to prevent infiltrations and smuggling.

The simultaneous investment in heavy infrastructure, such as the 1,096-km road, and social initiatives like the Vibrant Villages Programme indicates a dual-track strategy. India is attempting to secure its borders not only through physical deterrence and military mobility but also by stabilizing the socio-economic conditions of the populations living in frontier zones to prevent vulnerability and improve intelligence gathering.
