Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP intends to defeat Mamata Banerjee in her stronghold of Bhawanipur to win the West Bengal assembly election.
This strategy represents a direct challenge to the incumbent chief minister's power base, aiming to shift the political landscape of the state by targeting her specific constituency.
Shah said that the party's objective is to bring change, development, and an end to corruption in West Bengal [1, 4]. To achieve this, he said that Suvendu Adhikari was advised to contest from Bhawanipur instead of Nandigram [1, 3].
"We have to defeat Mamata Banerjee in her own home," Shah said [1].
Addressing the leadership of a potential new government, Shah said a Bengali will become the chief minister if the BJP comes to power [3]. He said that the people of Bengal are definitely going to bring change [1].
Shah also accused Banerjee of playing a "victim card" to maintain her political standing [4]. He said that a BJP chief minister would be sworn in on May 5 [2] if the party secures a victory in the assembly elections.
"People of Bengal are definitely going to bring change," Shah said [1].
“"We have to defeat Mamata Banerjee in her own home."”
By focusing on the Bhawanipur constituency, the BJP is attempting to delegitimize the incumbent's authority at its source. The promise of a Bengali chief minister is a strategic move to counter narratives that the party is an external force imposing leadership from New Delhi, attempting to localize the party's appeal within the state's regional identity.
