British driver Andy Green set a new world land-speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle this week in the Utah desert [1, 2].
The achievement serves as a high-profile demonstration of the performance potential of hydrogen internal-combustion engines [1, 2]. By pushing the technology to extreme speeds, JCB aims to prove that hydrogen can serve as a viable, high-performance alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
Driving the JCB Hydromax, Green reached a top speed of 406.320 mph [1] on the Bonneville Salt Flats [3, 4]. The run took place between Aug. 11 and Aug. 12 [2]. This mark significantly surpasses the previous diesel-powered record of 350.092 mph [1], which Green also held after driving the JCB Dieselmax.
Green is no stranger to extreme velocity. He previously set the outright world land-speed record in 1997, reaching 763.035 mph in the Thrust SSC [1]. While that record involved a different class of vehicle, the current project focuses specifically on the efficiency, and power of hydrogen fuel.
The project was a collaboration between Green and the British engineering company JCB [1, 2]. The team selected the salt flats of Utah for the attempt due to the vast, flat terrain required for safe acceleration, and deceleration at such speeds [3, 4].
The Hydromax is designed to showcase that hydrogen can power heavy-duty and high-performance machinery without the carbon emissions associated with diesel. The successful run establishes the first official land-speed record for a vehicle powered by hydrogen [1, 2].
