Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said Labor’s net-zero policy is destroying the Australian economy and pledged to scrap the emissions target.

These proposals signal a significant shift in the opposition's approach to energy and border security, prioritizing immediate economic stability and strict immigration enforcement over long-term climate goals.

Speaking at the Menzies Institute in Sydney, Taylor said the government's focus on net-zero emissions is harming economic growth. He pledged to keep coal power stations operating for as long as possible to ensure energy reliability and lower costs.

Taylor also addressed immigration, saying that a large and uncontrolled migrant population is deepening the nation's economic challenges. As part of a proposed overhaul of the immigration system, he pledged to deport 70,000 visa overstayers [1].

"Labor’s net zero obsession is ‘destroying our economy’," Taylor said.

Beyond the deportations, Taylor vowed to exclude migrants with subversive intent from entering the country. He said that these measures are necessary to protect national interests and stabilize the economy during a period of volatility.

This policy pivot represents a move toward economic nationalism, linking energy independence and strict border control as the primary drivers of national prosperity. By challenging the net-zero framework, the opposition is positioning itself to appeal to voters concerned with the cost of living and energy security, while framing immigration as a direct contributor to economic strain.
