Former BJP leader Annamalai launched the "We The Leaders" movement in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, with plans to eventually form a political party [1].

The initiative marks a significant shift in the region's political landscape by explicitly separating governance and public responsibility from religious identity. By positioning the movement as a secular alternative, Annamalai seeks to attract a broad base of supporters focused on state development.

Annamalai said the movement is designed to make Tamil Nadu a leading state through a focus on governance. He said the organization will not engage with faith-based politics to maintain its focus on public duty.

"Religion is outside our scope," Annamalai said [2].

The movement currently has 19 lakh members [4]. Annamalai said the organization will not transition into a formal political party until it reaches a target of 60 lakh members [4].

This growth strategy focuses on building a grassroots foundation before contesting elections. The organization aims to cultivate a sense of civic duty among its participants to prepare them for leadership roles in the state.

"Our movement is built on a foundation of responsibility," Annamalai said [3].

He said the transition to a political entity will occur at an appropriate time once the membership goals are met [2]. The movement's current phase focuses on organizing citizens around the concept of public responsibility rather than electoral campaigning.

"Religion is outside our scope."

The launch of 'We The Leaders' represents a strategic attempt to decouple political ambition from religious affiliation in Tamil Nadu. By setting a high membership threshold of 60 lakh before formalizing as a party, Annamalai is prioritizing the creation of a massive social network over immediate electoral gains, potentially challenging the established caste and religious dynamics of the state's political machinery.
