Respawn designers detailed the abilities of Axle, a new combat-racer legend joining Apex Legends in Season 29 [1].

The introduction of Axle aims to refresh gameplay dynamics by adding a movement-focused character to the roster. As the game evolves, these shifts in mobility can fundamentally alter how squads engage in combat and navigate the map.

Designers John Larson, Casey O'Brien, and Senior Security Analyst Conor Ford explained the specific components of Axle's kit. Her passive ability, known as "Drift," focuses on lateral movement. "Axle's passive 'Drift' offers unprecedented lateral control," Larson said.

Axle also features a tactical ability called "Nitro Gate." This tool is designed to provide a speed advantage to the entire team. "Nitro Gate boosts the entire squad, even downed teammates, into the fray," O'Brien said.

While Axle emphasizes high mobility, developers noted that the character is not intended to overshadow other roles. Respawn developers said that while Axle is another movement character, other playstyles remain viable and important.

This new character arrives as part of the Season 29 [1] update. The developers intend for the kit to provide new tactical options for players who prefer aggressive, fast-paced engagement styles. By allowing downed teammates to be boosted via the Nitro Gate, the character introduces a new layer of squad recovery, and repositioning during active firefights.

The addition of Axle signals a continued emphasis on high-mobility gameplay within Apex Legends. By introducing abilities that affect not only the user but also downed teammates, Respawn is expanding the utility of support-adjacent movement, potentially reducing the downtime associated with player elimination and increasing the pace of team rotations.
