Athletes in Seoul completed the “Aqua Slon” competition by swimming across Seokchon Lake and climbing the 123-floor Lotte Tower [1].

The hybrid event combines two distinct disciplines to test physical limits and mental endurance. By pushing the body through extreme exertion, participants seek the psychological benefits of stress relief, and a sense of personal achievement.

The course began in Jamsil at Seokchon Lake, where competitors swam across the water before transitioning to a vertical ascent. The climb required participants to navigate about 3,000 steps [1] to reach the finish line at the top of the Lotte Tower [1].

Finisher 안봉준 described the difficulty of the swimming portion, noting that the lower density of the freshwater made it feel as though the water was not moving as effectively. Despite the physical challenge, he said the experience provided significant mental health benefits.

"Because dopamine and endorphins are released, stress is relieved, and my self-esteem increases from having completed the race," 안봉준 said [1].

The event emphasizes the release of these chemicals to combat daily stress. The combination of a long-distance swim and a high-altitude climb serves as a rigorous test of cardiovascular health and muscular strength, pushing athletes to their absolute limits before the final descent.

The Aqua Slon event reflects a growing trend in 'hybrid' or 'extreme' athletics that prioritize holistic wellness by linking physical endurance with mental health recovery. By utilizing iconic urban landmarks like the Lotte Tower, the event transforms city infrastructure into a venue for public health and psychological resilience.
