Former Takarazuka Revue Star Arisa Tou debuted as an enka and kayo singer with a live performance in Tokyo on Monday [1].
The transition marks a significant shift for the 32-year-old [1] actress and singer, who is moving from the highly stylized musical theater of the Takarazuka Star Troupe into the traditional and popular music genres of Japan.
Tou released her debut single, "Sayonara wa Tasogare ni," on June 3 [2]. The performance took place at the Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park Open-Air Theater, also known as the Global Ring Theater [3]. During the event, Tou said she experienced vocal differences and gaps when transitioning from her theater training to the specific requirements of enka singing [1].
Her move into professional music follows her success in the 2025 Nippon Crown New Singer Audition, where she received the Nippon Broadcasting System Award [1]. Tou said she intends to pursue a "dual-wielding" career by balancing her work on stage with her new musical endeavors.
"I am filled with gratitude that I was able to welcome today thanks to everyone," Tou said [1]. "I want to do my best in my singer activities from now on, with feelings of gratitude to everyone who supports me and the customers who cheer me on" [1].
Tou said her primary motivation for this new career path is her desire to make many people smile [4]. She said she hopes audiences would continue to watch her as she navigates both the stage and the music industry [4].
“I want to do my best in my singer activities from now on”
Tou's transition from the Takarazuka Revue—an all-female troupe known for its rigid discipline and specific performance style—to the enka genre represents a strategic brand expansion. By leveraging her existing fame as a 'musume-yaku' (daughter role) star while adapting her vocal technique for traditional music, she is attempting to bridge the gap between theatrical fandom and the broader Japanese music market.
