Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said Wednesday that the state will implement the Uniform Civil Code [1].
The move represents a significant shift in the state's legal framework by replacing personal laws based on religion with a common set of rules for all citizens. This action aligns the state government with a core ideological goal of the ruling party.
Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma said the decision fulfills a specific pledge made during the election cycle. "In the election manifesto of the BJP party, we made a commitment that we will implement UCC in Assam," Sarma said [2].
The Chief Minister said that the implementation of the code is scheduled for May 25, 2026 [2]. He said that the government intends to honor every promise outlined in the BJP election manifesto, not just the Uniform Civil Code [1].
Sarma said that the "UCC (Uniform Civil Code) is a part of our" broader governance goals [2]. The announcement comes as the state prepares to transition its legal standards for marriage, divorce, and inheritance into a single unified system.
The administration's timeline provides a narrow window for the finalization of the legal framework before the May 25 target date [2]. The government has not yet released the full text of the specific regulations that will govern the new code.
“"In the election manifesto of the BJP party, we made a commitment that we will implement UCC in Assam."”
The implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in Assam marks a transition toward a secular legal system for personal matters, removing the plurality of religious laws. By tying the rollout to a specific manifesto date, the administration is signaling a commitment to ideological consistency and political accountability to its voter base.
