Australian authorities have confirmed the first local transmission of H5 avian influenza in a native greater crested tern in South Australia [1].
The discovery marks a critical shift in the virus's spread, as it has moved from migratory birds into the local wildlife population. This development increases the risk to other native species, including the endangered sea-lion colony on Kangaroo Island.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins announced the finding on July 9 [3]. "Local transmission has occurred," Collins said.
The confirmed case was identified in a greater crested tern at Robe on the Limestone Coast [1]. Dr. Sarah McDonald, a virologist with the South Australian Department of Primary Industries, said this is the first time H5 has been seen in a native seabird in Australia.
Beyond the initial confirmation, two additional suspected cases have been reported on other South Australian beaches [2]. These suspected cases include a sighting at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, and the first suspected instance on a metropolitan beach near Adelaide [2].
Mark Stevens, a spokesperson for the South Australian Department of Primary Industries, said the detection confirms the virus is now circulating among local birds.
Officials are monitoring the coastline to determine the extent of the spread. The transition from migratory introductions to local circulation suggests that the virus can now sustain itself within the regional ecosystem without new arrivals from overseas.
