Child mortality has risen steadily. In the four months leading up to the current peak, nearly 750 children died [5]. Recent daily reports show the toll climbing quickly; three children died in one 24-hour period [7], followed by another period where four more children died [11].
Health officials have broken down the mortality data to distinguish between clinical and laboratory findings. Of the total deaths, 96 have been laboratory-confirmed as measles [12], while 748 are classified as suspected measles deaths [11].
The surge has put immense pressure on the national healthcare system. The rapid transmission suggests that large segments of the pediatric population remain unprotected by the vaccine, leaving them vulnerable to the virus and its complications.
