Residents of 70 Mile House, British Columbia, are evacuating after the Pear Lake and Fiftynine Creek wildfires merged over the weekend [1].
The merger of these two massive blazes has increased the threat to the community and limited emergency access for first responders. This development forced officials to expand evacuation orders to ensure resident safety as the fire perimeter grew [2].
The two fires merged late Saturday [3]. The combined area burned by the merged wildfires now exceeds 63,000 hectares [4]. Because of the merging fires, authorities have placed 193 properties under an evacuation order [5]. An additional 104 properties are currently under an evacuation alert [6].
Transport in the region has been impacted. Highway 97 is closed between Loon Lake Road and Chasm Road to facilitate firefighting efforts and protect evacuees [7]. The community of 70 Mile House, located north of Clinton, remains the primary area of concern for the British Columbia Wildfire Service [8].
Officials warned that remaining in the area during an active order creates dangerous conditions for both civilians and emergency crews. A fire official said, "It's a safety issue. So if you stay on your property, you have to stay on your property. If you have an emergency situation or a health situation, the ambulance isn't going to be able to get to you because they can't come into an alert area or an order area" [9].
Emergency crews continue to monitor the perimeter as the fires consolidate. The scale of the burn area suggests a high intensity of fuel and heat, factors that make containment difficult in the rugged terrain north of Clinton [10].
