The Board of Control for Cricket in India moved the IPL 2026 [1] final from Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.
This relocation highlights the tension between national governing bodies and local associations over ticket allocations and revenue control for the world's most valuable cricket league.
The decision followed a dispute regarding complimentary tickets. The BCCI announced the shift on Thursday after the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) requested approximately 10,000 [3] extra free tickets for the event.
Devajit Saikia, Secretary of the BCCI, said, "The KSCA's demand for an additional 10,000 complimentary tickets was untenable."
While some reports suggest the move was due to unspecified local authority requirements, the BCCI cited the ticket demands as the primary driver for the change. The governing body determined that the request compromised the logistics of the event.
A BCCI spokesperson said, "We had to relocate the final to ensure fairness and logistical feasibility."
The final will now be hosted at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which is the largest cricket stadium in the world. This venue provides a higher capacity and different logistical frameworks than the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The move comes as the league continues to scale its commercial operations. The clash over complimentary tickets underscores the difficulty of balancing local hospitality expectations, and the strict commercial mandates of the central board.
“"The KSCA's demand for an additional 10,000 complimentary tickets was untenable,"”
The relocation of a championship final over a ticket dispute demonstrates the BCCI's willingness to prioritize centralized control and revenue integrity over local partnerships. By moving the event to Ahmedabad, the board avoids setting a precedent where state associations can dictate ticket distribution, ensuring that the financial and logistical parameters of the final remain under the governing body's strict oversight.
