Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon criticized WNBA referees Thursday evening after her team lost 95-87 [1] to the Dallas Wings.
The outburst highlights growing tension between elite WNBA teams and officiating consistency, particularly regarding how star players are called upon the court.
Hammon expressed frustration in Dallas, Texas, regarding the lack of free-throw opportunities for her primary scorers. She noted that star players A'ja Wilson, Chennedy Carter, and Jackie Young combined for only one free-throw attempt [1, 2].
"I'm f--king tired of that bulls--t," Hammon said [3].
The coach pointed to the disparity between her stars and the opposition to illustrate the problem. "When Awak Kuier shoots more free throws than A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Chennedy Carter all combined, that's a problem," Hammon said [5].
The Aces entered the game with a 4-2 record [4] and fell to 4-3 [4] following the loss. Hammon appeared to anticipate league discipline for her comments regarding the officiating crew.
"Give me my fine," Hammon said [5].
The loss marks a challenging road trip for the Aces as they navigate the early season schedule. Hammon's comments suggest a belief that the officiating is not providing her team with the same whistle as their opponents, a sentiment that often surfaces in high-stakes professional matchups.
“"I'm f--king tired of that bulls--t"”
Hammon's public confrontation with the officiating crew reflects a broader struggle for consistency in WNBA officiating. By highlighting a specific statistical anomaly — three star players combining for a single free-throw attempt — the coach is attempting to quantify a perceived bias or failure in game management that directly impacts the outcome of professional contests.
