More than 2,000 humanoid robots are competing in the second World Humanoid Robot Games currently taking place in Beijing [1].
The event serves as a global benchmark for the integration of artificial intelligence and physical robotics. By testing machines in diverse environments, manufacturers can identify the gap between laboratory success and real-world utility.
Representing about 300 companies [2], the robots are being tested across 51 different disciplines [3]. These challenges range from athletic feats like soccer and dance to precise technical tasks, such as assembly work using electric screwdrivers [4].
One of the most significant highlights involves a sprinting event. A humanoid robot completed the 100-meter dash in 9.39 seconds [5], surpassing the world record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt in 2009 [6]. Another model, known as Lightning of Honor, recorded a time of 9.47 seconds [7].
Despite these physical achievements, some industry leaders suggest that robotics has not yet experienced a transformative breakthrough. The CEO of Unitree said that the field is still missing a "ChatGPT-type leap" [8].
The games opened on Aug. 19 [9] and continue to showcase how AI can manage complex motor skills. The competition aims to promote rapid iteration among manufacturers by pitting the latest models against one another in a public forum.
While the robots can now run and play ping-pong, the focus remains on whether these machines can transition from controlled competitions to autonomous assistance in human environments [4].

The event highlights a widening gap between robotic hardware and software. While machines have reached superhuman speeds and precision in specific tasks, the lack of a 'ChatGPT moment' suggests that general-purpose reasoning and adaptability still lag behind physical capabilities. The transition from specialized competition to general utility remains the primary hurdle for the industry.
