West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari issued an ultimatum to alleged Bangladeshi infiltrators to leave the country immediately or face strict action [1].
The warning signals an escalation in the state government's efforts to curb illegal immigration. By invoking existing laws to expedite deportations, the administration is intensifying its domestic security and border management strategy.
Adhikari said the warning Wednesday at the Hakimpur checkpoint, located in the Basirhat subdivision of the North 24 Parganas district [2]. He specifically targeted individuals gathered at the border, using the phrase "Jaldi Jaldi Bhago," which translates to "Leave quickly" [1].
The Chief Minister said the move is part of a broader state government crackdown described as "detect, delete and deport" [1]. This initiative aims to identify and remove individuals residing in the state without legal authorization.
Adhikari clarified the legal framework being used for the operation. He said, "This initiative is being executed under the provisions of the existing Foreigners' Act rather than any new legislation" [3].
During his visit to the checkpoint, Adhikari noted the presence of a large number of alleged illegal Bangladeshi nationals [4]. He said authorities should expedite the deportation process to clear the queues at the border [4].
The use of the Foreigners Act allows the state to act on existing legal grounds without waiting for new legislative mandates. This approach emphasizes the government's intent to use administrative power to resolve the issue of illegal residency rapidly [3].
“"Jaldi Jaldi Bhago" (Leave quickly).”
This move represents a shift toward more aggressive administrative enforcement of immigration laws in West Bengal. By utilizing the Foreigners Act, the state government is bypassing the need for new legislation to accelerate the removal of non-citizens. This strategy may increase diplomatic pressure on Bangladesh to accept returnees and could lead to heightened tensions in border regions as the 'detect, delete and deport' policy is implemented.
