Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said voters will no longer trust former AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha after his move to the BJP.

The criticism highlights a deepening rift within the Aam Aadmi Party following high-profile defections to the Bharatiya Janata Party, potentially impacting the party's image as a champion of the common voter.

Mann said during an interview with NDTV regarding the political shift that occurred in April 2024 [2]. During that period, Chadha and six other AAP leaders joined the BJP [1]. Chadha announced his switch on a Friday, moving from an elected position in the Lok Sabha to a selected seat in the Rajya Sabha.

Mann said that abandoning a position given by voters creates significant public anger. He emphasized the distinction between the two legislative bodies, noting that the Lok Sabha is elected while the Rajya Sabha is selected.

"When you abandon a position given to you by the voters, people get incredibly angry," Mann said. "They think, 'We chose you directly, what greater honour were you looking for?' The Rajya Sabha is selected, whereas the Lok Sabha is elected. There is a unique pride and responsibility in being elected."

The Chief Minister said that the decision to leave a direct mandate from the people represents a failure of responsibility. By prioritizing a selected appointment over an elected one, Mann said the trust between the representative and the electorate is severed.

This public rebuke follows the April 2024 exodus [2] where a total of seven leaders, including Chadha, transitioned to the BJP [1]. Mann's comments underscore the tension regarding political loyalty and the perceived betrayal of the democratic process when elected officials vacate their seats for different legislative roles or party affiliations.

"When you abandon a position given to you by the voters, people get incredibly angry."

The conflict centers on the symbolic and legal difference between direct election and indirect selection in the Indian parliamentary system. By framing Chadha's move as a rejection of the voters' will, Mann is attempting to distance the AAP from the perception of opportunism while painting the BJP as a destination for those who abandon their democratic mandates.
