The Bureau of Indian Standards seized more than 1.5 kg [1] of non-hallmarked gold jewellery during a raid in Secunderabad.
This operation targets the illegal trade of gold and the widespread failure of some vendors to meet national purity standards. Because hallmarking ensures consumers receive the gold quality they pay for, non-compliance represents a significant risk to public financial security.
The Bureau of Indian Standards, known as BIS, conducted the operation in coordination with the Andhra Pradesh CID. The joint team targeted a godown in Secunderabad where the unregistered jewellery was stored [1].
"The BIS team, along with the Andhra Pradesh CID, conducted a raid," Inspector P. Ravi Kiran said.
Officials said that the seizure is part of a broader effort to sanitize the gold market. The agency is focusing on warehouses and retail points that bypass certification processes to avoid taxes or misrepresent gold purity.
"BIS officials said that the jewellery was seized from a godown in Secunderabad," a BIS official said.
The agency said that these raids are not isolated incidents but are part of a systemic crackdown on non-compliance. By removing uncertified gold from the supply chain, the BIS aims to protect buyers from fraud.
"The BIS is taking strict measures to curb the illegal trade of gold jewellery and ensure that all jewellers are complying with hallmarking standards," a BIS official said.
The seizure of 1.5 kg [1] of gold serves as a warning to other traders in the region who operate outside the legal framework. The investigation continues as authorities seek to identify the source of the non-hallmarked metal.

This seizure underscores the Indian government's push to formalize the gold market through mandatory hallmarking. By targeting godowns and warehouses, authorities are moving beyond retail storefronts to disrupt the logistics of the illegal gold trade, which often relies on uncertified stock to evade regulatory oversight and purity guarantees.
