BJP MP Janardan Mishra defended India's ethanol-blending petrol policy on Monday, challenging critics with a remark about the source of fuel.

The statement highlights the tension between the Indian government's push for energy independence and consumer concerns regarding the E20 blend's impact on vehicles.

Speaking in Bhopal, Mishra questioned those opposing the policy by asking, "Will pure petrol come from your father's house?" [1]. He said that the shift toward ethanol blending is a necessity for national security rather than a choice.

Mishra said that India's reliance on foreign energy is a critical vulnerability. He said that India produces only around 20 percent [2] of the crude oil it consumes, while the remaining 80 percent [2] is imported.

The MP also pointed to the logistical challenges of maintaining a steady oil supply. He said that ships must travel an additional distance of approximately 18,000 km [3] to supply oil to the country.

These geopolitical and shipping challenges, according to Mishra, make the E20 policy essential. By blending ethanol, a renewable fuel produced domestically, the government aims to reduce the financial and strategic burden of crude imports.

Critics of the ethanol-blending program have raised concerns about engine compatibility and fuel efficiency. However, Mishra said these concerns are misguided when weighed against the scale of India's import dependency.

The E20 program is part of a broader strategy to lower carbon emissions and support domestic farmers who produce the sugarcane and grains used for ethanol production.
