The Bharatiya Janata Party served a legal notice to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday, threatening a ₹100 crore [1] defamation suit.
The legal clash highlights intensifying friction between the regional government and the national party over allegations of political bribery and instability in Jammu and Kashmir.
The notice was served July 13, 2026 [3] in Jammu. The BJP (Jammu & Kashmir unit) is demanding a written retraction and a public apology from Abdullah regarding his claims that the party attempted to bribe National Conference legislators to defect, a practice often referred to as poaching.
Party officials said the allegations are false, baseless, and defamatory. The legal notice specifies that Abdullah must provide evidence for his claims or issue the apology within seven days [2]. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the filing of the civil suit for ₹100 crore [1].
Abdullah responded to the legal threat with sarcasm on social media. "Honoured to receive BJP's love letter," Abdullah said.
The BJP maintains that the Chief Minister's statements were intended to mislead the public and damage the reputation of the party. The party said it will pursue the matter in court if the seven-day window [2] expires without a satisfactory response from the Chief Minister's office.
“"Honoured to receive BJP's love letter."”
This legal move represents a strategic escalation in the political rivalry between the BJP and the National Conference. By demanding a massive financial penalty and a formal retraction, the BJP is attempting to force the Chief Minister to either produce concrete evidence of poaching or publicly concede that the accusations were unfounded, which would weaken Abdullah's political standing.
