The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won more than 180 seats [2] in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, securing a majority in the state.
This victory marks a historic shift in the region's political landscape, as the BJP successfully breached the stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata.
The result represents a significant reversal from the 2021 Assembly election. In that cycle, the BJP won 77 seats [1], while the TMC secured 213 seats [3]. The 2026 results indicate a massive swing in voter preference toward the BJP.
Reports said the party's success was the result of a long-term strategic effort. Following the 2021 losses, the BJP identified 75 constituencies where they had lost by narrow margins [4]. The party spent the following five years specifically targeting those seats to flip them in the 2026 contest.
This targeted approach allowed the BJP to convert previous losses into a governing majority. The shift in the assembly's composition ends years of TMC dominance in the state's legislative body.

The BJP's victory suggests that a data-driven, localized strategy focusing on 'marginal' seats can overcome entrenched political strongholds. By focusing on 75 specific vulnerabilities over a five-year period, the party shifted the state's electoral balance from a 2021 deficit to a 2026 majority.
