Experts said that these trends are not isolated incidents. While current heatwaves are driving the immediate growth, long-term climate change is expected to cause blue-green algae to increase in the coming years [1, 2]. This creates a recurring challenge for water management boards who must monitor water quality more aggressively as temperatures rise.
Public health officials said that when in doubt, people should stay out of the water [2]. The combination of stagnant water and high temperatures creates an ideal environment for these organisms to thrive — a cycle that is becoming more common across Northern Europe.
