Bolt Technology OU and China’s Dongfeng Motor Group Co. have signed a deal to launch an electric-vehicle ride-hailing fleet in South Africa.
The partnership aims to reduce the financial burden of rising fuel costs for drivers while expanding the availability of green transportation in the region. This move leverages Bolt's existing infrastructure to integrate Chinese EV technology into the African transport market.
The rollout will begin in Cape Town, with fleet management handled by Yugo Rides [1]. The initiative focuses on deploying specific Dongfeng models, namely the Box and 007 electric vehicles [2].
Bolt has established a significant presence in the region, having invested $180 million in South Africa [2]. The company said it holds more than 50% of the market share in the country [2]. By introducing electric vehicles, Bolt intends to maintain its dominant position while shifting toward a more sustainable operational model.
The agreement comes as Chinese automotive manufacturers increase their footprint in emerging markets. Dongfeng's entry into the South African ride-hailing sector via Bolt provides a scalable way to introduce its EV models to a wide range of urban consumers.
While the initial launch is centered on Cape Town, the partnership creates a framework for potential expansion into other South African cities. The collaboration between the ride-hailing platform, the Chinese manufacturer, and the fleet manager Yugo Rides is designed to streamline the transition from internal combustion engines to electric power [1].
“Bolt has invested $180 million in South Africa”
This partnership signals a strategic pivot for urban mobility in South Africa, where high fuel volatility often squeezes driver earnings. By pairing a dominant platform like Bolt with Chinese EV manufacturing and dedicated fleet management, the deal lowers the barrier to entry for electric vehicle adoption. It also highlights China's growing influence in the African automotive sector as it seeks new markets for its electric car exports.
