Consumer protection agencies in Brazil warned that prices for Father's Day gifts and services vary wildly between retailers this month.

These disparities can leave shoppers paying several times the necessary cost for the same items. The warnings aim to protect consumers from price gouging as they prepare for the holiday on the second Sunday of August.

Procon agencies in São Paulo, Pernambuco, and the municipality of São Carlos conducted the research [1]. Some reports indicate that price differences for gifts can reach 300% between different stores [1]. In Pernambuco, specific gift price variations were recorded up to 234% [2]. Other data for consumer goods, including smartphones, televisions, and perfumes, showed variations as high as 234.45% [5].

Beyond physical products, the agencies found significant gaps in the cost of services. Research indicated that barber services, specifically haircuts, and beard trims showed price variations of up to 400% [4].

The agencies urged consumers to compare prices across multiple vendors before making a purchase. Officials said that shopping around is the most effective way to avoid overpaying during holiday peaks.

While some reports focused on consumer goods, others highlighted the extreme volatility in service pricing. The agencies said that these fluctuations are not uniform across all sectors but are prevalent in high-demand Father's Day categories [1], [2].

Price differences of up to three times between stores

The wide pricing gaps identified by Procon highlight a lack of price standardization and high volatility in the Brazilian retail market during seasonal peaks. By publicizing these variations, consumer protection agencies are attempting to shift market power back to the consumer through price transparency, potentially forcing retailers to compete more aggressively on price to attract shoppers.
