Sen. Nelsinho Trad said Brazil should maintain diplomatic dialogue with the U.S. before taking any economic retaliation against proposed new tariffs.
The standoff threatens to destabilize trade relations between the two nations. If negotiations fail, the resulting economic barriers could disrupt supply chains and increase costs for exporters and consumers alike.
Trad, who serves as the president of the Senate's Commission on Foreign Relations and National Defense, said "cautela" on June 2 [1]. He said that the Brazilian Senate may launch a new mission to Washington to negotiate the terms of the trade dispute.
The tension centers on a proposal from the U.S. government to implement a 25% additional tariff on Brazilian products [2]. According to reports, the U.S. government has criticized the Pix instant payment system as a catalyst for these proposed measures [3].
A U.S. government spokesperson said the American government will continue to engage in dialogue with the Brazilian government until July 15, 2026 [3], before adopting any retaliation measures.
Trad said that a negotiated solution is the only way to avoid an escalation of economic tensions. He said that the priority remains finding a diplomatic path to resolve the impasse without triggering a trade war.
While the proposed tariffs could have significant national implications, Trad said that the impact in Mato Grosso do Sul may be limited [4]. Despite this regional outlook, the broader federal strategy remains focused on avoiding immediate retaliatory tariffs to preserve the stability of the bilateral relationship.
“"cautela"”
The window for negotiation is narrow, with a hard deadline of July 15. The U.S. government's specific criticism of the Pix system suggests that this trade dispute is not merely about tariffs, but potentially about the intersection of financial technology and national economic sovereignty. Brazil's decision to prioritize diplomacy over immediate retaliation indicates a desire to avoid a broader trade war that could isolate its economy.
