The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party has offered limited post-election cooperation with the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in Sachsen-Anhalt [1, 2].

This potential shift challenges the "Brandmauer," the long-standing political firewall used by German parties to isolate the AfD. If BSW breaks this tradition, it could reshape coalition dynamics in eastern Germany and provide the AfD with a degree of political legitimacy it has historically been denied.

Fabio De Masi, a BSW co-chair, said the party offers the AfD point-based cooperation after the state election but clarified that BSW does not want an AfD Ministerpräsident [1]. This stance suggests a tactical approach where BSW may collaborate on specific policy issues without handing the top executive office to the far-right party.

However, internal party messaging appears conflicted. Sahra Wagenknecht, the founder of BSW, said the Brandmauer is completely idiotisch and called for a cross-party Ministerpräsident that could include AfD members [4]. This contradiction between the party's leadership and its co-chair highlights a tension within BSW as it navigates its role as a political challenger to the AfD.

The party's strategy aims to challenge the AfD politically while maintaining enough flexibility to govern [1, 4]. This balancing act occurs as the state prepares for the Landtagswahl on Sept. 6, 2026 [2, 3].

Sociologist Steffen Mau said voters typically follow the momentum of the winners [5]. The BSW's willingness to engage with the AfD may be an attempt to capture that momentum, or prevent the AfD from becoming the sole voice of protest in the region.

"The Brandmauer is completely idiotisch," said Sahra Wagenknecht.

The BSW's fluctuating stance on the AfD indicates a broader struggle within Germany's populist left to define its relationship with the far-right. By offering limited cooperation while publicly criticizing the 'firewall,' BSW is attempting to position itself as a pragmatic alternative that can bridge the gap between traditional governance and anti-establishment sentiment without fully endorsing the AfD's leadership.
