Cambridge International Education (CIE) is investigating reports that an examination paper scheduled for May 15, 2023 [1], was leaked in Pakistan.
The incident threatens the integrity of the international qualification process and creates significant uncertainty for students awaiting confirmation on their exam schedules.
Reports of the leak first surfaced on May 10, 2023 [2], after social-media users claimed to have obtained the exam materials. The leak prompted an immediate response from the body responsible for setting the Cambridge International Examinations papers.
"We are aware of reports about a paper leak and are investigating," a Cambridge International Education spokesperson said [2].
While the board confirmed the investigation, conflicting reports emerged regarding the status of the test. Geo News reported that the board decided to postpone the exam in response to the security breach.
"The Cambridge International Examinations paper scheduled for May 15 has been postponed after the leak," a Geo News anchor said [1].
However, other reports indicate that CIE had not confirmed a postponement at the time of the initial leak reports. The board's official stance remained focused on the ongoing investigation into how the materials were compromised [2].
This is not the first time the region has faced challenges with exam security. The investigation aims to determine the extent of the leak and whether the May 15, 2023 [1], date remains viable for the administration of the test.
“"We are aware of reports about a paper leak and are investigating."”
The discrepancy between the official CIE statement and the Geo News report highlights the volatility of information during academic crises. If a leak is verified, the board must choose between postponing the exam, which disrupts student schedules, or replacing the paper, both of which risk the perceived fairness of the qualification.
