Toronto-based Cascara Energy and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) are installing a radiant cooling system at the East Broadway subway station [1].
This pilot project addresses the extreme summer temperatures that frequently plague the New York City subway network. By installing cooling technology directly into the ceiling arches, the partnership aims to lower station temperatures while capturing extracted heat for reuse elsewhere [1], [2].
The initiative utilizes a specialized radiant system designed to absorb heat from the environment. Unlike traditional air conditioning, which can be difficult to implement in deep underground tunnels, this technology targets the structural elements of the station to create a more sustainable cooling effect [2].
