Konami unveiled a new 2D action-exploration game titled "Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse" during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday [1, 2, 3].
The announcement marks a return to the series' roots by pairing the franchise with the developers of "Dead Cells," Evil Empire and Motion Twin [1]. This collaboration suggests a shift toward a more fluid, modern take on the traditional 2D exploration gameplay that defined the early era of the series.
According to the reveal, the game is scheduled to launch in October 2026 [1, 2]. It will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Xbox Play Anywhere [1].
The story takes place in Paris in 1499 [4]. The setting depicts a city engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures emerge from the shadows [4]. This narrative is positioned 23 years after the events of "Castlevania: Dracula's Curse" [2], focusing on the growth and development of a young Belmont.
"Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, the highly anticipated 2D action game from the teams behind Dead Cells, launches this October," GameInformer said [1].
The gameplay trailer showcased the title's action-exploration mechanics. While some reports suggest a specific launch date of Oct. 15, major outlets including IGN and Eurogamer only confirm the October window [1, 2, 3].
"Medieval Paris, where the tolling bells herald the end. 1499, Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows," Gematsu said [4].
“Castlevania: Belmont's Curse... launches this October.”
By partnering with Evil Empire and Motion Twin, Konami is leveraging the 'roguelike' and tight combat expertise of the Dead Cells team to revitalize the Castlevania brand. Placing the game in 1499 Paris—rather than the traditional Transylvanian castle—indicates an effort to expand the series' atmospheric scope while maintaining the linear-yet-exploratory 2D structure.
