The Centrist Reform Union unveiled a new campaign poster Wednesday with the slogan "Living Comes First" during a press conference at the National Diet [1].
This rebranding effort comes as the party seeks to increase its momentum and signal a positive direction in ongoing merger negotiations with the Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito [1], [3].
Representative Ogawa (Centrist Reform Union) said the focus of the new imagery is the message itself. He said that the slogan is specifically designed to contrast the party's platform with the current administration and address the current hardships facing citizens [3].
"This is exactly what we want to put forward and appeal to people," Ogawa said [3].
While the Centrist Reform Union is pushing for a refreshed image, the timeline for a formal merger remains uncertain. Shunichi Mizuoka, representative of the Constitutional Democratic Party, said it may be extremely difficult to reach a conclusion within the current session of the Diet [2].
Despite the uncertainty regarding the merger, the political calendar continues to move toward the next general election. The official announcement for the House of Representatives election is scheduled for July 23 [4], with the voting and counting of ballots set for Feb. 8, 2027 [4].
To facilitate these transitions, working-level meetings between the three parties are scheduled to take place on July 9 [1]. These talks aim to synchronize the parties' platforms before the election cycle begins in earnest.
“"Living Comes First."”
The Centrist Reform Union is attempting to pivot toward a populist, cost-of-living focus to attract voters before the July 23 election announcement. By prioritizing 'living' over ideological purity, the party hopes to create a viable platform for a three-party merger. However, the skepticism from the Constitutional Democratic Party suggests that while the branding is aligned, the structural and policy integration of the three groups remains a significant hurdle.
