Local organizers in Chiba Prefecture held the South Kuroshiri Hamaguri Festival on Sunday at Ichinomiya Beach [1, 2].
The event celebrates the official opening of the beach and promotes the region's local specialty, the Kuroshiri Hamaguri clam [1, 2]. By highlighting these regional delicacies, the festival aims to draw tourism and support the local fishing economy during the peak summer season.
A central attraction of the celebration was a clam-picking competition known as “Hamaguri no Tsumamidori” [1, 2]. During the contest, participants including children and local residents used chopsticks to collect as many hamaguri clams as possible within a set timeframe [1, 2]. The activity served as both a community-building exercise and a way to showcase the size and quality of the local harvest.
To feed the crowds, organizers served approximately 600 kg of clams [1]. The large quantity of seafood ensured that most attendees could sample the local delicacy.
Participants praised the quality of the food. One attendee said, "It's so delicious. It's the first time I've eaten something this tasty" [1]. Another participant said the clams were plump and larger than those they usually see [1].
The festival took place on the southern portion of Kuroshiri Beach, where the combination of sandy shores and specific water conditions supports the growth of the prized hamaguri [1, 2, 3]. The event concluded with the community celebrating the start of the beach's operational season.

The South Kuroshiri Hamaguri Festival functions as a strategic blend of cultural preservation and economic promotion. By linking the opening of Ichinomiya Beach with a competitive event centered on a local specialty, Chiba Prefecture reinforces the identity of the Kuroshiri region as a premium source of seafood, which helps maintain the visibility of traditional harvesting practices in a modern tourism market.
