China said it is ready to provide all possible help to Venezuela after two massive earthquakes struck the country this week.
The offer of assistance comes as the Venezuelan government manages a growing humanitarian crisis and begins the process of reconstruction in the affected regions.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China is willing to provide what help it can in an appropriate manner according to the needs of the Venezuelan side.
Casualty reports from the disaster vary significantly between news agencies. France24 reported at least 164 people killed [2] and nearly 1,000 injured [2]. Meanwhile, AFP reported a lower death toll of at least 32 people [1] and said that hundreds were injured [1].
The earthquakes have caused widespread destruction, prompting immediate international attention. The U.S. is also deploying rescuers to assist in the recovery efforts in Caracas and surrounding areas [2].
Beijing's willingness to assist reflects its diplomatic relationship with Venezuela. The Chinese government said that its support would be tailored to the specific requirements identified by the Venezuelan administration to ensure an effective response to the emergency.
“China is willing to provide what help it can in an appropriate manner according to the needs of the Venezuelan side.”
The offer of aid from Beijing, coinciding with the deployment of U.S. rescuers, highlights Venezuela's position as a focal point for competing global influences. By providing disaster relief, China strengthens its strategic partnership with the Venezuelan government during a period of acute vulnerability.
