Built by the Beijing-based company X-Humanoid, the robot competed at the World Humanoid Robot Games [1]. The event took place over the weekend of Aug. 22-23, with the record-breaking sprint occurring during the opening ceremony on Sunday [1], [2].
Lightning Bolt's time of 9.39 seconds [1] beats the long-standing world record of 9.58 seconds [1] set by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. The competition was designed to showcase the capabilities of advanced humanoid robotics through various physical challenges, including weightlifting and tug-of-war [3], [4].
The games featured a massive scale of participation, with more than 2,000 robots [5] competing in the Beijing events. These machines represented 16 different countries [5], highlighting the global race to develop sophisticated bipedal movement and balance.
Engineers at X-Humanoid developed the robot to test the boundaries of speed and stability in a humanoid form. While human sprinters rely on biological muscle and reflex, Lightning Bolt utilizes advanced actuators and sensors to maintain its pace and form over the short distance.
