Gelato, a kitten approximately three months old [1], suffered a spinal injury that left him unable to stand. Because he weighed just over one pound [1] and stood about four inches tall [1], standard wheelchairs were not an option.

Veterinary assistant Mallory Smith and shelter staff constructed the device using Hot Wheels toy cars, cardboard, rulers, and tape [1, 3]. The makeshift wheelchair allowed the kitten to regain mobility and begin the process of recovery.

“We wanted to give him a chance to move on his own, so we built a little wheelchair out of Hot Wheels and some cardboard,” Smith said [1].
