Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay delivered his first public address in Trichy to thank constituents for their support following his electoral victory.
The speech marks the beginning of a new political era in the state, as Vijay seeks to align his leadership with the historical legacies of Tamil Nadu's most influential leaders.
Speaking at the rally in Tiruchirappalli East, Vijay referenced the influence of M.G.R., Anna, and Periyar. He said that some observers suggested even the late CM M.G.R. did not secure as much vote share in his first election [1].
"I am not comparing myself to M.G.R. M.G.R. is M.G.R., but I am your Vijay, who has come to work in the path shown by M.G.R., Anna, and Periyar," Vijay said [1].
The event took place on May 10, 2024 [2]. During the proceedings, the 51-year-old leader emphasized his commitment to serving the public as a servant rather than a ruler [2].
Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, also addressed his background during the oath ceremony. He said that he was not born into a "prince family" [3].
In his address to the crowd, he described himself as the "first servant" of the people and reiterated his intent to follow the established paths of previous state leaders [4]. The rally served as a formal expression of gratitude to the voters who provided the mandate for his administration [1].
“"I am your Vijay, who has come to work in the path shown by M.G.R., Anna, and Periyar."”
By invoking the names of M.G.R. and Periyar, Vijay is attempting to legitimize his leadership through the established Dravidian political tradition. This strategy aims to bridge the gap between his celebrity background and the ideological expectations of the Tamil Nadu electorate, signaling a continuity of social justice and populist policies rather than a radical departure from the state's political history.
