Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield said he expects more from himself following a significant offensive slump during the NHL playoffs.
Caufield is a primary scoring threat for Montreal, and his inability to produce points during the postseason limits the team's offensive depth. His struggles come as the Canadiens attempt to find a response following a 4-2 [3] loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
The sniper has scored only one goal [1] in eight playoff games and has gone pointless in his last four contests [2]. This stretch follows a seven-game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning and continues into the current series against the Buffalo Sabres in Montreal.
Caufield attributed the decline in production to the defensive strategies of his opponents. He said that teams have employed tight defensive gaps and heavy contact to limit his space and neutralize his game.
"I expect more out of myself," Caufield said.
He further elaborated on the statistics of his recent performance, noting that he expects more from himself after scoring just once in eight playoff games and going pointless in his last four [2].
To address the slump, Caufield indicated that he is seeking guidance from the coaching staff. He said that working with Martin St. Louis could help snap his playoff funk.
The struggles highlight the difficulty of transitioning from the regular season to the more physical, restrictive environment of playoff hockey, where defensive systems are designed specifically to shut down elite shooters.
“"I expect more out of myself."”
Caufield's struggle reflects a common postseason challenge where elite goal-scorers are neutralized by specialized defensive schemes. For the Montreal Canadiens, the lack of production from their top sniper creates a reliance on secondary scoring, placing more pressure on the rest of the roster to generate offense against disciplined opponents.
