Experts said the earthquake was caused by tectonic activity along the Pacific plate boundary. This specific geological positioning made the event especially destructive to the local infrastructure in western Colombia.
Local residents in Pereira and San José del Palmar reported significant structural damage. The national emergency declaration allows the government to bypass certain bureaucratic hurdles to deploy military and civilian resources to the Chocó region more rapidly.
