The surge in sightings poses a significant public safety risk as bears enter residential areas to find food, increasing the likelihood of dangerous encounters.
Wildlife officials said that drought conditions have limited the natural food sources bears typically rely on. This scarcity has prompted animals to seek out human food, leading to a rise in sightings and conflicts in several regions, including Jefferson County, and the town of Monument.
The escalation in activity has resulted in a spike of violent encounters. There were four bear attacks in Colorado during the current week [1]. This brings the total to six bear attacks in the state so far in 2026 [2].
In response to these record levels of activity, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has ramped up statewide safety outreach. The agency recently held an outreach event in Monument to educate residents on how to secure food sources and prevent bears from entering their properties.
Officials said that securing trash bins and removing outdoor pet food are critical steps to reduce attractants. By eliminating easy food sources, the state hopes to discourage bears from venturing into human settlements, reducing the need for lethal interventions.
