Comcast has activated free Wi-Fi motion sensing on millions [1] of Xfinity gateways across the U.S. starting Tuesday.
This update allows standard internet hardware to function as a security system, removing the need for customers to purchase separate motion-sensor hardware for basic home monitoring.
The feature is part of the Xfinity Shield suite and enables routers to detect physical movement within a home. Users can manage the system through the Xfinity app, which allows them to set specific monitoring modes including Home, Away, and Night [2]. When the system detects activity while in a monitored mode, it sends an alert to the user's mobile device [3].
By utilizing existing Wi-Fi signals to sense movement, Comcast is turning millions [1] of its newer routers into active sensors. This capability is designed to enhance both home security and parental-control features for subscribers [2].
The rollout targets newer Xfinity gateways specifically, meaning older hardware may not support the motion-sensing capabilities. The company said the tool is a free addition to its existing service ecosystem to provide customers with integrated home-monitoring capabilities [3].
“Comcast is transforming millions of its routers into motion sensors”
This move signals a shift in how internet service providers leverage hardware already inside the home to compete with dedicated smart-home security companies. By utilizing Wi-Fi sensing—which detects disruptions in signal patterns caused by human movement—Comcast can offer security features without requiring new device installations, though it increases the amount of behavioral data the company can potentially monitor within a private residence.
