An Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread from the Ituri epicenter into neighboring North Kivu province.

The expansion of the virus threatens to overwhelm local health systems in eastern Congo, where limited treatment capacity and difficult contact-tracing efforts are already under significant pressure.

Health officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization said the virus is moving beyond its original boundaries [1, 3]. This geographic shift increases the risk of further transmission in densely populated areas and regions with unstable infrastructure.

As of Saturday, Aug. 19, total confirmed Ebola cases have reached 5,514 [2]. The death toll has risen to 2,642 [2]. The severity of the current wave is highlighted by the fact that 317 deaths were reported in the previous seven days alone [2].

Officials said rapid transmission is driving the spread. The surge in cases has strained the ability of medical teams to isolate patients and track those who may have been exposed to the virus [1, 2].

While the primary expansion is noted in North Kivu [1, 3], some reports indicate the outbreak may have also reached rebel-held areas in South Kivu. However, health authorities have focused their immediate alerts on the movement between Ituri and North Kivu [1, 3].
