The Congress party announced it will support actor-politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party to form a secular government in Tamil Nadu.
This alliance represents a strategic move to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party or its proxies from taking power in the state. By backing TVK, Congress aims to ensure the formation of a government that protects the Constitution.
Following the assembly election held on April 23, 2026 [4], TVK emerged as the single largest party. The party won 108 seats [1], though it fell 10 seats short of a majority [2]. To secure the government, TVK chief Vijay has sought support from the Congress party.
Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal confirmed the development. "TVK chief Vijay has requested Congress' support to form government in Tamil Nadu," Venugopal said.
A Congress spokesperson said that the party has decided to support TVK in forming the government.
To solidify this partnership, five Congress MLA-elects are ready to ally with Vijay's TVK [3]. This support provides a critical boost to TVK as it seeks to bridge the gap to a majority and finalize government formation with the Governor.
Vijay has reportedly shifted his MLA-elects to a hotel as the push to form the government continues. The move is part of a broader effort to stabilize the party's position before meeting with state officials.
“"Congress has decided to support TVK in forming the government in Tamil Nadu."”
The decision by Congress to back TVK signals a shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, where a cinema-led party has successfully disrupted traditional power structures. By prioritizing a 'secular' front over a direct bid for power, Congress is positioning itself as a kingmaker to block the BJP's expansion into the south, while Vijay transitions from a cinematic icon to a central political figure in the state.
