The Indian National Congress has triggered a split with the DMK in Tamil Nadu by forming an alliance with actor-politician Vijay’s TVK party.
This rupture threatens the stability of the broader INDIA bloc, as the DMK and Congress have long served as critical partners in the region. The collapse of this partnership could reshape the political landscape of Tamil Nadu and weaken the opposition's collective strength against the ruling coalition.
Political analyst N. Ramasubramanian said the Congress "backstabbed" the DMK by rushing to support Vijay. This shift in allegiance is viewed by DMK supporters as a betrayal that eroded trust and caused other allied parties to drift away from the original coalition.
The move follows the rise of Vijay’s TVK, which has won 108 seats [1] in Tamil Nadu. Congress chose to support the TVK for power-sharing purposes, effectively firing its alliance ties with the DMK to align with the actor-politician's growing influence.
Reports on the status of the wider INDIA bloc remain conflicted. One representative of the DMK said the "INDIA bloc is gone," suggesting the coalition has already dissolved [2]. However, other reports question whether the split will rip the bloc apart, suggesting the total collapse may still be in question [3].
The tension centers on the perceived instability of Congress's regional strategy. By prioritizing a new partnership with TVK, the party has alienated a long-standing ally in the DMK, leading to a fragmented opposition in one of India's most politically active states.
“Congress “backstabbed” DMK by rushing to support Vijay”
The split indicates a shift in Tamil Nadu's power dynamics where emerging third-party forces, like Vijay's TVK, can disrupt established national coalitions. If the INDIA bloc cannot resolve the friction between the DMK and Congress, it may struggle to present a unified front in future elections, potentially leaving the ruling party with a clearer path to victory in the south.
