Senior Congress leaders are struggling to resolve a deadlock over the selection of the party's candidate for the Kerala Chief Minister post.

The stalemate threatens the party's stability in the state following the election results declared in late March 2026. A failure to reach a consensus could weaken the party's governance transition and internal cohesion.

Reports indicate that four aspirants are currently in the running for the position [1]. The primary conflict centers on factions supporting K.C. Venugopal and V.D. Satheesan. While some reports suggest Venugopal is the preferred choice among party legislators, other accounts maintain that no clear consensus has been reached [2].

Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra have reportedly been trying to break the impasse [3]. Rahul Gandhi is also described as being caught between the competing interests of Venugopal and Satheesan [4].

Venugopal has remained active in the political sphere during this period of internal friction. On April 7, 2026, he wrote an open letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan [5]. In the letter, Venugopal posed 10 questions to the CM regarding the functioning of the LDF government [6].

"I have written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan raising a string of allegations and questions over the LDF government's functioning," Venugopal said [5].

Beyond the state-level dispute, Venugopal has targeted national institutions. During an India Today Conclave, he criticized the Election Commission of India [7].

"The party has lost faith in the Election Commission of India as it has turned into a tool of the ruling dispensation," Venugopal said [7].

The internal struggle reflects a broader challenge for the party in managing regional ambitions while maintaining national leadership directives.

Four aspirants are currently in the running for the position.

The inability of the Congress party to quickly name a Chief Minister candidate in Kerala highlights a systemic tension between local legislative preferences and the directives of the national high command. By involving senior figures like Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra, the party is attempting to project a unified front, but the public nature of the rivalry between Venugopal and Satheesan suggests deep-seated factionalism that could impact the party's legislative agenda.
