The remains of soldiers from the Continental Army are being moved to a new memorial in Lake George, New York.
This transfer provides a permanent resting place for patriots who died during the American Revolutionary War. The move ensures these soldiers are publicly honored after centuries of anonymity.
The remains were discovered in 2019 [3] during a construction project located just south of the West Point Military Academy in the Hudson Valley [1, 2]. The site is known as the Trail of the Fallen [1, 2].
Officials are transferring the skeletal remains of 44 fallen patriots [4] to the new memorial. This site, known as the Repose of the Fallen, is designed to hold the remains of nearly 50 fallen patriots [5]. The transfer process took place in 2024 [3, 4].
The effort focuses on honoring those who served in the Continental Army. By relocating the remains from the discovery site to Lake George, the state provides a dedicated space for commemoration, and historical reflection.
The discovery of the remains in 2019 [3] highlighted the hidden military history within the Hudson Valley. The transition to a formal memorial allows for a structured environment where the public can pay respects to the soldiers who fought for U.S. independence.
“The remains were discovered in 2019 during a construction project.”
The relocation of these remains from a construction site to a dedicated memorial transforms a chance archaeological find into a permanent historical landmark. By consolidating the remains of approximately 44 to 50 soldiers in Lake George, the state creates a centralized point of remembrance that preserves the legacy of the Continental Army's presence in the Hudson Valley.
