Health authorities in Delhi and Bengaluru are monitoring a sharp rise in H1N1 swine flu infections during the current monsoon season.

The surge has prompted a formal health alert and increased surveillance to prevent widespread transmission. Because influenza spreads rapidly in humid conditions, the spike puts pressure on urban healthcare infrastructure and increases risks for vulnerable populations.

Confirmed H1N1 cases in Delhi have reached 1,777 [6] this year. Other reports indicate the count has crossed 1,700 [1], while earlier figures from the Delhi health department cited 1,349 [4] and 1,344 [5] cases. This represents a nearly six-fold increase compared to the 229 cases recorded at the same point last year [7].

The intensity of the outbreak has seen more than 110 H1N1 infections recorded in a single day in Delhi [2]. Beyond swine flu, the city has reported more than 2,300 cases of influenza A [3].

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and Union Health Minister JP Nadda have overseen the response to the outbreak [1]. These measures include boosting surveillance, and ensuring hospitals are prepared for a higher volume of respiratory patients.
