Indraprastha Gas Limited increased the price of compressed natural gas by ₹1 per kilogram [1] in Delhi and the National Capital Region.

This price adjustment affects thousands of commuters and commercial transport operators who rely on CNG as a more affordable alternative to petrol and diesel. Frequent price volatility in the region has previously sparked protests from political groups, including the Delhi Congress.

The price hike is effective as of June 22, 2024 [3]. The increase applies to Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, as well as selected cities in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh [1].

Reports on the exact cost per kilogram vary. One report listed the new price in Delhi as ₹75.09 per kilogram [3], while another source cited the rate as ₹80.09 per kilogram [5].

IndiaTVNews said the revision was prompted by a reduction in domestic gas supplies [3]. This is not the first instance of rising costs for consumers in the region. Earlier reports indicate a price increase of ₹2 per kilogram occurred on May 15 [5], and another hike was recorded on Nov. 23, 2023 [1].

The frequent shifts in pricing reflect the instability of domestic energy procurement. As the primary supplier for the region, IGL adjusts rates based on the cost of gas acquisition and availability. The impact is most acutely felt by auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, whose profit margins are thin and sensitive to even small per-kilogram increases.

CNG prices in Delhi and the surrounding NCR were raised by about ₹1 per kilogram

The repeated price hikes in the National Capital Region highlight the vulnerability of India's urban transport infrastructure to fluctuations in domestic gas supply. Because CNG is marketed as a low-cost, environmentally friendly alternative, consistent price increases may diminish its appeal for commercial drivers and increase the operational costs of public transit in the capital.
