Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said the most significant opportunity for artificial intelligence in aviation is within air traffic control [1, 2].
This focus on infrastructure highlights a critical bottleneck in the U.S. aviation system. While AI is often discussed in the context of autonomous flight or passenger experience, Bastian said that the primary barrier to efficiency is the management of airspace rather than the technology inside the aircraft.
Bastian pointed to specific routing inefficiencies to illustrate the current state of aviation. He said that partly because of air traffic control issues, it takes longer to fly from Atlanta to New York today than it did in the 1950s [1, 2].
This comparison suggests that despite advancements in jet engine technology and aerodynamics, the systemic management of flights has not kept pace. The CEO said that the biggest opportunity for AI is not inside the plane, but air traffic control [1].
By applying AI to the coordination of flights and airspace management, the industry could potentially resolve the congestion that leads to these extended travel times. The current reliance on legacy systems and human-centric coordination has created a scenario where flight durations on certain routes have regressed compared to mid-century standards [1, 2].
