Delta Air Lines will launch the first nonstop route from the United States to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2026 [1].
The move signals a strategic pivot toward the Middle East market, aiming to capture growing demand for direct travel to Saudi Arabia's capital. By establishing this connection, Delta seeks to challenge existing regional hubs and diversify its long-haul network.
Peter Carter, President of Delta Air Lines, detailed these plans during a presentation at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) conference. Carter said the airline is focusing on growing its presence in the Middle East to better serve corporate and leisure travelers.
Alongside the new route, the airline is expanding its Premium Select cabin. This premium-travel offering is designed to bridge the gap between economy and business class. The expansion of this cabin is expected to affect millions of long-haul travelers [2].
Carter said the investment in premium seating is part of a broader effort to enhance the passenger experience on extended flights. The Premium Select cabin provides additional legroom and upgraded amenities, catering to a demographic of travelers seeking more comfort without the full cost of a business-class ticket.
The Riyadh service represents a significant milestone for U.S. aviation, as no other American carrier currently operates a direct flight to the city. This expansion coincides with Saudi Arabia's efforts to attract more international tourism and investment through its national development goals.
Delta's strategy combines new geographic reach with a refined product offering. By scaling the Premium Select cabin across more of its fleet, the airline aims to increase revenue per seat while appealing to a wider range of affluent travelers on long-distance journeys.
“Delta will launch the United States' first nonstop route to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2026.”
Delta's entry into the Riyadh market suggests a shift in U.S. carrier strategy, moving away from reliance on traditional Middle Eastern hubs like Dubai or Doha. By pairing this new route with an expanded premium cabin, Delta is positioning itself to capture high-yield business traffic and luxury leisure travelers during a period of rapid economic expansion in Saudi Arabia.
