Democratic candidate Denise Powell is campaigning to win Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District [4] following the retirement of Rep. Don Bacon.

The race for the seat, often called the “Blue Dot,” is viewed as a pivotal opportunity for Democrats to gain a foothold in a traditionally Republican-leaning state.

Powell's strategy centers on expanding her appeal beyond the Democratic base. She said the key to winning in November [3] is to reach out to Republicans who are not happy with what is happening right now.

This approach follows the Democratic primary held on May 12, 2026 [1]. Powell said the current political climate favors a change in representation for the district.

"This is our year," Powell said.

External analysts have noted a shift in the district's political leanings. Sabato’s Crystal Ball said the Bacon district is shifting toward the Democrats [5].

The 2nd District has long been a competitive area where narrow margins often decide the outcome. Powell said that targeting dissatisfied GOP voters will allow her to bridge the gap needed to secure the seat in the general election this November [3].

"This is our year."

The retirement of a long-term incumbent like Don Bacon transforms a stable seat into an open contest, significantly increasing the probability of a party flip. By targeting moderate or dissatisfied Republicans, Powell is attempting to build a coalition that reflects the shifting demographics of Nebraska's 2nd District, which serves as a bellwether for the broader political mood in the region.
